For years Republicans have highlighted the corrupt deeds of politicians in both Leinster House and Stormont, deeds generating enormous wealth for the rich both at home and outside of Ireland. Many of our natural resources and essential utilities are sold off to private companies and individuals for relatively small amounts in comparison to their true value and in absolute ignorance of the people
An estimated €420 Billion worth of natural oil has been promised to an oil giant, British-Dutch company Royal Dutch Shell. The economic ramifications of Royal Dutch Shell are seen throughout the world with countless oil spills destroying natural ecosystems and other disasters. A prime example is a spill in Nigeria in the 1970s where now almost 40 years after, oil is still polluting the surrounding areas.
Another resource under threat is the gold in county Tyrone which is to be mined by Canadian company, Dalradian Gold. Apart from taking a resource from the Irish people, this mining will both destroy the beauty of the landscape and also pollute surrounding lands and rivers.
It is also worth noting that when the oil dries up and the gold deposits are depleted, both Royal Dutch Shell and Dalradian will pack up and clear out, leaving behind them a mess for the people of Ireland to sort.
Other essentials in the hands of foreign, greedy ventures are energy firm ‘Bord Gáis’ which is owned by the British company ‘Centrica’, Irish Water which is owned by ‘Ervia’ and the health insurance firm ‘Irish Life Health’ which is owned by the Canadian company ‘Great-West LifeCo’.
Many other resources and essential utilities are being stolen from the hands of Irish people and given to big business companies, mostly outside of Ireland, in return for financial gain and the business portfolio’s of greedy and corrupt politicians.
To those profiting off the back of the Irish people we ask you to remember and heed the following quote:
“The Republic guarantees religious and civil liberty, equal rights and equal opportunities to all its citizens, and declares its resolve to pursue the happiness and prosperity of the whole nation and of all its parts, cherishing all the children of the nation equally”.
